The Truth about Humans

****
4/5

Thanks to Leah Ruth Hart for giving me this book to review.

The Truth about Humans is a very enjoyable sci-fi romance, which was different than anything I have read before. It was well written and interesting characters, even if parts of it were unrealistic like the living arrangements and how fast the relationships developed. The only real problem I had with this book was that the first 10% was a bit info-dumping and the first third was a bit slow paced.

Tezzix is very naïve having lived a sheltered life but that makes her stubborn, curious, and knows what she wants. Jack is very protective and caring but unlike most books they show the dark side of being like that and what he is capable of, but he is also studious and intelligent. Autumn is kind, fun-loving but also feels very vulnerable and damaged. Cade is very secretive and for a while I could not figure him out.

I really enjoyed this book and I hope there are more with these characters. I would recommend The Truth about Humans to fans of The Vanishing Spark of Dusk by Sara Baysinger and Princess of Tyrone by Katie Hamstead.

The Rogue Queen

***
3/5

Thanks to Netgalley and Skyscape for giving me this book to review.

The Rogue Queen is the third book in the fast paced and girl power Hundredth Queen series. This book had the best world building in the series so far and has action, adventure, and romance. While I really liked the friendships in this book, I am so tired of love triangles and I didn’t feel it needed to happen again between Kali, Deven, and Ashwin.

Kali is reckless as she does not listen to people’s advice or think before she acts but by the end she seems to have some more character growth and considers the consequences of her actions. I wish Deven would grow a backbone, as he just whined and didn’t talk to Kali about anything, but he is brave and very loyal. Ashwin is kind, noble, and naïve but is also trying to reverse the wrongs for the previous book and really wants what is best for his people. My favourite character is Natesa as she is so sassy, has been through so much, and saves everyone so many times.

I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading The Warrior Queen, the next book. I would recommend The Rogue Queen to fans of the rest of The Hundredth Queen series.

The Fire Queen

3/5

Thanks to Netgalley and Skyscape for giving me this book to review.

The Fire Queen is the light, fast paced sequel to The Hundredth Queen which improved on the world building and descriptive writing. However, I found the story very predictable as it was so similar to the first book. I also was not a fan of the love triangle in this book, and while I liked the alternating POVs in this book as we got to see more story, it did make me like Deven less.

Kali is a good character as she knows what she wants now and is very loyal to her country and the people in it. I wish Deven would grow a pair as in the entire book he was moping around, pushing people away, and then was upset that they weren’t around. I found Ashwin’s character a bit inconsistent but also naïve and a pushover. Brother Shaan’s character changed completely in this book as he seemed a bit shady.

While this book is not perfect I still enjoyed it, and am looking forward to reading The Rogue Queen. I would recommend The Fire Queen to fans of the first book The Hundredth Queen.

The Hundredth Queen

***
3/5

The Hundredth Queen is an easy YA romantic fantasy read. While a fun book it was cliché and very predictable, with insta-love. While fast paced and darker than I was expecting, I wanted more world building.

Kali is naïve and curious but has an inner rebelliousness who is willing to fight injustice. Deven is projective but is also torn with his loyalties which lead him to appear indecisive. I really liked the friendship between Kali and Jaya as they looked out for each other and did all they could to protect each other.

I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the next book The Fire Queen to discover what happens next. I would recommend The Hundredth Queen to those who enjoyed Threats of Sky and Sea and Fire and Thorns.

Dragonsoul

***
3/5

Thanks to Kayl Karadjian for giving me this book to review.

Dragonsoul is a fun and light fantasy adventure book which is perfect for tweens. It has an interesting premise of everything and everyone being grey, and colour being outlawed. However, it was a bit slow paced and I would have liked more world-building.

Denyth is a stable, hardworking farm boy who is loyal to those who he cares about. Littlehorn is kind and gentle but because he is very sheltered he is naïve. Nelai is curious and adventurous but I had trouble connecting with her compared to the other characters. Zero was the most interesting character as he was a mystery.

I enjoyed Dragonsoul and would recommend it to fans of Eragon and First Light by Michelle Frost.
